Automatic Sliding Doors at the Quantum Nano Centre University of Waterloo

Dor-Control Craftsmen is proud to have partnered with the University of Waterloo to install automatic sliding doors at the Quantum-Nano Centre (QNC) at the University of Waterloo. The building is named after the founder of BlackBerry, Mike Lazaridis and his wife Ophelia. Originally built in 2012, the state of the art building is the largest undergraduate nanotechnology engineering program in Canada.

THE CHALLENGE

Designing the entrances at the Quantum-Nano Centre required special consideration to the look and functionality to the overall façade. The labs specialize in nano-fabrication and each lab needed to be properly secured sealed off to the common areas. The building itself consists of 285,000 square feet that currently houses 50 researchers and over 100 graduate students. Accessibility was also a major consideration to make the building available for everyone. Our solution needed to take into consideration all of these challenges.

THE SOLUTION

AAADM Certified Technicians from Dor-Control Craftsmen installed the “Clean Room” Automatic Sliding Door System, which specializes in high-level hygiene control applications. These automatic sliding doors are acoustic rated and offer hands free operation for infection control making it ideal for operating rooms and X-ray rooms, also designed for industrial applications including clean rooms, laboratories and pharmaceutical facilities.

The door remains in the closed position even if there is a power outage. This maintains airtight performance, but still allowing the door to open and close manually. The entrance exceeds North America’s expectations by offering minimal air leakage, a low profile, sleek design and the convenience to open completely for full clearance. We believe these entrances were the perfect design to accommodate the nano-fabrication labs.

CONCLUSION

The automatic sliding door entrances allow scientists and university leaders to work in a state of the art facility that specializes in nano-fabrication technology. Taking into consideration accessibility and functionality, we were able to help build cutting edge laboratories for the scientists working within the unique space. University of Waterloo President Feridun Hamdullahpur says “You’re entering into a building that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.”
